It feels really good to write that title. It feels good because it shows growth and that I’ve come a long way. The old Sarah would have kept quiet about her faith. But after going through the trials I’ve gone through I know that I can’t keep quiet. Because God is good. And He has never failed me.
I want to share how you can grow closer to God as I have. Two things before we dive in…
First, if you aren’t a Christian don’t feel like you can’t be here in this space because you are welcome! I would love for you to be here even if we don’t share the same beliefs. Fun fact, some of my best friends are atheists. Even though we have different beliefs we still get along and can have a friendship.
I hope the same for you and me 🙂
Second, I am not claiming to be a pastor or enlightened or like I got it all together. Because I don’t. I’m not religious, but I want to share my relationship with God with you. Because it’s changed my life so much and I hope the same for you.
I mess up every single day. I still sin. I still fall short. But I’m still trying to do my best. Not because I’m looking to be perfect. I’m looking to be as obedient as I can before God.
I’m only sharing my experiences and what’s helping me. I hope and pray it helps you too.
First, we want to ask ourselves why it’s important to draw closer to God.
For starters, God wants to have a relationship with us. He wants nothing more than for us to know Him and vice-versa.
I know what it’s like to grow up thinking I knew God all because I went to church. But I didn’t.
The only time I hung out with God was when I went to church or if I was praying to Him because I wanted something.
But I never really spent time with Him. I didn’t know His character. I didn’t know Him and His heart.
Think about it like this…
Have you ever had a friend who acted like you two were super close? But they never called you or texted you? They never checked in to see if you wanted to grab a coffee and just hang out? Not to mention they always would forget your birthday? (I’m sure we’ve all had that friend lol.)
Now, would you believe that person was really your friend? Like truly would do anything for you? Or were they just the friend that only text and calls when they need something?
When I thought about it like that I realized that was how God feels with us.
We show up to Him with our prayer requests, but never our praise.
We come to Him when things get bad…but we never spend time with Him when things are good.
We complain, but never give thanks.
We curse Him when things go wrong and sometimes go months, maybe years without spending time with Him or having a real conversation with Him.
Now, remember what I said earlier…I am the FIRST to admit that I am guilty of all these things. So please don’t think I’m preaching at you because I’m not. I want you to see how together we can cultivate a relationship with God and the transformation that can happen in our lives.
Because it’s the greatest thing you’ll ever experience.
Here are three things to draw closer to God
Reading Our Bible Every Single Day
Now before you scroll away while rolling your eyes, hear me out real quick. I get it… it can feel really hard to read the Bible. Some say it’s boring. Some say it’s hard to read or understand.
As someone who grew up in a Christian household, I actually didn’t read the whole Bible until I was the ages 27-28.
I was able to read it because I followed the Bible reading app and did the 365 days of Following Jesus in 1 year.
It’s a FREE plan to read the Bible in its entirety in just one year.
What I love about this app is that it allows you to read only four chapters per day. Which takes about 10-15 minutes on average a day, so not long at all.
I love reading the Modern English Version because it’s so much easier to read than the King James Version.
Reading in the app is amazing too because you’re able to highlight different verses and follow along much easier. It can also send you notifications as a reminder to read your Bible.
Why should we read the Bible?
I never understood it before either until I started praying more. You see, God gave us the Bible to instruct us and give us the wisdom we would need to continue on through life.
It’s not like He created this world and just forgot about us and said, “okay I hope you figure this out.”
Think of the 66 books of the Holy Bible as a library of amazing true stories that are here to give us encouragement throughout our life.
It’s like a life manual on how to live and succeed. It’s full of incredible stories on love, war, peace, forgiveness, grace, abundance, miracles, and the greatest gift God could ever give us.
His Son dying on the cross for our sins.
Before I started reading my Bible daily, I was angry. Angry about everything. Angry about heartbreak, horrible exes that mistreated me, the family that had forgotten me, and health issues I was suffering from.
I was angry that I wasn’t where I wanted to be. I was angry I was struggling internally with depression and so much hatred for myself.
But when I started to read through the Bible and actually study it…I felt a weight lifted off of me. It’s not like all my issues went away, but I felt stronger on the inside. Something was changing. I didn’t quite understand it, but I knew I wanted it to always stay and grow.
Never in a million years did I think that I’d be able to read the Bible in its entirety… but ya girl did it!
And so can you : )
Get on the Bible app…it’s FREE and will change your life.
Stop Listening To Secular Music
So anybody who knows me knows that I LOVE music. I grew up doing musical theatre and I feel like when I can’t talk or feel…I just sing.
Music has always just made sense to me.
So when I became closer to God it was really difficult for me to let go of secular music. Music that was speaking about things that kept my mind from God.
I’ll admit, this is something I’m still working on, but I feel so much better when I listen to Christian music vs secular sounds.
Some of my favorites are:
Tribl and Maverick City Music ( I love, love, love their song “Promises)
I’ve noticed that the peace I feel in my heart is so much greater when I’m listening to positive and encouraging music.
If you want to tune into K-LOVE while you’re driving then definitely do because they are a Christian and listener-supported radio station with zero ads for a 100% positive music experience.
I believe they have a FREE 30-day challenge where you listen to only Christian music for 30 days and see the difference. And trust me, there IS a difference!
Pray, pray, and pray some more
I once heard a quote that said if you have time to worry about it then you have time to pray about it.
Prayer changes things. It’s powerful because it’s our direct source with God and our way to talk to Him.
I like to God very casually as if I’m talking to a friend because that’s how I feel about Him.
I don’t view Him as somebody who is angry and cruel, but more so a loving Father who wants to have a relationship with me and you. With all of His children.
If you’re not really “good” at praying then take that mindset out of your brain haha! Because there’s no such thing as being bad at praying.
I always begin my prayers with “Father God” and then I give thanks for all the things He’s done for me that day and for my life. Then I’ll tell Him about what’s going on in my life and how I’m doing and what I’m struggling with. From there I try to listen in stillness and be at peace with what’s going on and try to listen.
I’ve found that God speaks to us in the quiet and I’m trying to listen more carefully.
I’ll end with more praise and thankfulness and I always end with saying “In Jesus Name-Amen.”
That’s how I personally pray so if that gives you an idea on how to do it too then amazing!
I’m currently listening to a book called “Dangerous Prayers” by Pastor Craig Groeschel on Audible. I’m only a chapter in, but so far I’m enjoying it and I’ll let you know what I learn and think of it at the end!
Look, even if you did these three steps you will feel such a significant change in your relationship with God. I know because I do it as best as I can and it’s changed me for the better.
I’m curious, what are some things that are helping you on your walk with God? What things are you doing or not doing that are drawing you closer to Him?
Please share yours below beauty! I’d love to hear : )
As always, thank you so much for being here. You have no idea how nice it is to talk with you and to share things that are important to me that I know will help you grow and evolve into the person you want to become.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
All the love,
